China: Guilin passion fruit harvest up by over 30% this season

"The major production areas of passion fruit in China are in provinces like Guangxi, Fujian, Yunnan and Taiwan. In recent years, the acreage and output of passion fruit in Guangxi has put it near the top of the list. The supply of passion fruit from Guilin, Guangxi, normally starts in July and ends in January. The production volume is affected mainly by weather conditions and pests." said Mr. Xuan Li from Guilin Wanhea Agricultural Products Ltd.

"Compared to last year, the yield of passion fruit in Guangxi has increased by over 30%, but the percentage of poor-quality fruit may be bigger this year due to a lack of professional cultivation techniques. It is anticipated that the variable quality will cause a polarization of sales in the market. Thus, the small percentage of high quality fruit will remain at a high price while the larger percentage will undergo slow sales at much lower prices. Moreover, some growers and sellers may turn to e-commerce platforms to get rid of their stock of low-quality fruit. This would certainly undermine the brand image of Guangxi passion fruit and weaken the sales."

"Our company was founded in June 2015. We have our own plantation and cooperative partners covering a total cultivation area of over 4,000 acres of land. Apart from cooperatives, we also work with individual growers of passion fruit. In order to effectively prevent and control pests, we also have our own team of experts in addition to the cooperation with large research institutes.

Currently, our high-quality passion fruit with the trademark of ' Wanhe' is sold through both traditional channels (80%) and e-commerce platforms (20%) to wholesale markets and supermarkets across the country. In the future, we hope to export our products so that oversea consumers will have an opportunity to taste our quality passion fruit from Guilin."
