Andres Kuratomi, General Manager of Bengal Agricola:

"Colombia: "We expect to produce 18% more pineapples"

Colombia is being affected by heavy rains that have caused disasters in regions such as Mocoa. However, according to Andres Kuratomi, the General Manager of Bengal Agricola, Colombia's pineapple production is far from this area, so it has not been affected by the disaster, and, in any case, pineapple producers have the necessary drainage and irrigation infrastructure to mitigate the effects of this type of meteorological circumstances, both for when there is an excess of rains and for a drought.

Points of differentiation

In fact, despite the current situation, one of the advantages of Colombian pineapples, compared to its competitors in Costa Rica, is that Colombia suffers less rainfall. According to Kuratomi, Colombia can be a serious competitor for Costa Rica. However, instead of competing, Bengal Agricola prefers to differentiate its product through its quality and origin.

18% more volume
The main export markets for Bengal agricultural pineapples are Europe and the United States, as well as the Colombian market. "In Europe, our most important markets are Spain, Portugal, and Italy. In addition, we have a new market for our pineapples: Germany," stated Kuratomi, adding that he expected his company would grow. "We have production all year and, for this season, we expect to increase our volume by 18% and our exports by 20%," he said.

Similar prices
Since the international supply of pineapples is currently low, they are achieving high prices in the European market. "The prices for Colombian pineapples are very similar to those of the best pineapples in Costa Rica," the exporter stated.
