Anna Letwin, of Haskap Berries
"Poland: "The price of our apples is not profitable at the moment"
The prices at which Polish growers must sell their apples are not the most desirable. "Without taking the price of transport into account, one kilo of our apples is being sold at an average of 0.29 Euro," affirms Anna Litwin, one of the managers of the company Haskap Berries. In this regards, every year is different, "everything depends on the weather and the production volume of the main apple producing countries."
This family-run company, which has been producing apples since 1975, is in its third generation, producing more than 900,000 kilos of different varieties per year. "We estimate that we export around 70% to other countries," says Litwin, with Serbia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Israel, the Netherlands and Germany as some of their main markets. "We are currently finding our way into the Middle East, but it's a slow process," adds Letwin.
At this time, Italy is a market against which they must compete. "It's not so much about quality, but about transportation. They have more options, which makes the price cheaper," points out Letwin. This also takes a toll on the final price.
