Guatemala (Frutesa) resumes avocado exports to Europe

Frutesa was the first Guatemalan company to export avocados to Europe, about eight years ago. However, the market situation at that time was not favourable to the company, since the European market was not as developed as it is now and prices were lower than in the domestic market, so they had to stop exporting them. However, eight years later, the situation is completely different, so Frutesa is going to resume its exports of avocados to the European market as of this month.

The European market has developed
"Nowadays, the cultivation of avocados in Guatemala is highly developed, so we have many plantations and a great volume, which has taken a toll on prices in the domestic market. Meanwhile, the European market has developed and there is now a huge demand for avocados," explains Luis Fernando Teo, of Frutesa. "That's why we think it's a perfect time to resume our exports. We will start developing that market with our current customers, with whom we have been working with other fruits and vegetables for decades, by shipping consolidated containers."

Year-round supply
The company has customers in France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Sweden, and the first container with avocados will arrive in Rotterdam on 27 April, followed by another container the following week. Later, in August, exports will resume, guaranteeing a year-round supply thanks to the geographical position of Guatemala and its microclimates. "The European market demands good quality avocados and Guatemala is able to supply them," assures Teo.

Great advantage
In fact, avocados are native to Guatemala, whose microclimates and soils yield fruits of excellent quality, placing them in a position of great advantage over other producing countries, according to the exporter. "Furthermore, at Frutesa we offer our producers technical assistance and training on post-harvest procedures so they can meet the quality standards of our customers."

"Our company has always focused on providing excellent quality and service, so we will put our 34 years of knowledge in the export of fresh fruits and vegetables into practice to make this project a success. We are happy and motivated and we know that this project will create many jobs for our people," he concludes.
