New portion packaging for nuts and dried fruit

Nuts are dried fruit are now seen by many consumers as part of a healthy diet. “They are still gaining popularity, and we naturally like to anticipate that. We‘ve noticed that demand for various products is increasing considerably, and see sales doubling every three years,” says Jan Jelders from NDFC from Sint-Katelijne-Waver, who runs the company with his brother Eddy and nephew Wim.

New products
NDFC (Nuts Dried Fruit Company) was founded more than ten years ago, and has been active from Sint-Katelijne-Waver for about a year-and-a-half now. “In 2016 we invested in various things. For example, the website has been completely renewed, and a corporate video was added. One of our latest products are ‘nuts’ made from corn that taste wonderful. We call this corn snack Buenas Noches. We introduced this product late 2015, and is a huge success in catering. Another novelty recently added to the assortment is home-made granola. We strongly believe that granola products will definitely find their way in the movement to a more balanced and healthy diet. The granola is richly filled mixed with a broad composition of ingredients. The customer personally decides the granola’s recipe. There are many mix-possibilities, from organic to gluten-free. Granolas could be a nice addition to the range of both greengrocer’s shops and specialist’s shops.”

Portion packaging
“We also have a new possibility option: packing our products in portion packs. This packing method is suitable for catering, events and companies that offer salads or prepared meals, for which certain ingredients should be kept separate form others. Our new machine allows for many different sizes and options,” Jan explains.

More than just a nut supplier
NDFC shows in its corporate video what they believe in. “We and our customers don’t just see us as ‘nut supplier,’ no, we are much more than that. A lot of work is involved, and we want to offer a complete solution. We listen to the customer’s wishes, give advice when necessary, and supply tailor-made products in the correct packaging.”

This segment deserves more attention
The brothers see many opportunities for more investments. “Unfortunately, nuts and dried fruit are still treated harshly by supermarkets. We think they should be given just as important a place as fruit and vegetables. This segment deserves much more attention.” No plans have been completely agreed upon yet for 2017. “Our goal is to continue our strong growth, which will mean an expansion in the short term. We are currently mostly active in Flanders, but the Netherlands, Germany and France are also attractive markets. Perhaps they are also open to our new products.”
