Italy: Harvesting of spring Radicchio di Chioggia Igp to start soon

The "Chioggia capitale del radicchio" (Chioggia capital of radicchio) event held at the Brondolo wholesale market ended on 26th March 2017.

Watch the interview with Giuseppe Boscolo Palo

As stressed by Giuseppe Boscolo Palo - market representative and president of Consorzio del Radicchio di Chioggia Igp - the quality and quotations of winter produce were good, but only after the frost in January. Spring radicciho is now ready to be harvested.

"We want to collaborate with the Lusia and Rosolina markets to work with bigger quantities. The qualities of radicchio di Chioggia are undeniable, but a similar product is being cultivated all over the world. We want Pgi products to be recognised by consumers. There is a huge difference, as our seeds are certified and the produce is grown locally."

The Chiogia market facility is rather old and coordinator Boscolo Palo is looking for tools and resources to relaunch it. For example, only one dealer owns a refrigerated unit.

The hope is for radicchio di Chioggia Igp prices to remain high. "The product is outside multinational seed company logic. The hardest part is to make consumers understand the difference."
