The pear market is developing positively. “Prices of Conference pears went up earlier this year, and they have remained stable ever since. I expect that the market will stay good as well. In addition to domestic supermarkets, export countries are absorbing Conference well. I definitely don’t feel negative about the Conference market. I expect few price differences in the coming months. Perhaps there will even be a price pickup for the long storage from June,” says Wilbert van Wijk from Van Wijk Fruit.
On the other hand, the apple market is developing with difficulty, according to the grower. “Jonagold remains a difficult strain. For good quality Elstar, prices are decent, but the apples which are not in Class I take down average prices considerably. And not every batch has 90 per cent Class I. Despite the Smartfresh treatment, firmness is scarce. It is difficult to say how the market will continue developing. I believe quite good batches will remain on the market. Fortunately, ‘peeling prices’ are doing quite well, but that all depends on how many Class I apples you have at your disposal.”
