Prices likely to firm up

Volume of imported blackberries to slow down

Imported blackberries have seen a season of good volume. So says Rodolfo Liau-Kang of Miami, Fl.-based Crystal Valley Foods. “There’s a good supply of blackberries right now from Guatemala and Mexico,” says Liau-Kang. “We just passed the peak of production and we’ll continue with good volume for the next month.” In turn, demand for the berries has been quite consistent this season as well. “Overall there’s been good demand,” says Liau-Kang. “We have seen demand growing for blackberries year after year and we continue to bring in more volume as our customer base grows.”

The trouble with gaps
If anything, the gaps in supply and the consistent demand for berries can leave breaks in the marketplace when importing berries from Guatemala or Mexico. “It’s a challenge when there are gaps in the marketplace but we are always able to cover.” All that healthy supply and equally healthy demand has meant a season of relatively steady pricing as well. “Pricing this season has been fairly steady when all conditions are good and we have been able to give our customers consistent, quality product.”

Looking ahead, Liau-Kang estimates that prices will likely firm up and the volume on berries will also come off. “The weather has been good this year so that has helped with overall volume, quality, and pricing. With our success in blackberries to date, we are also looking into sourcing the full berry range in the coming seasons.”
