"Spain: "We export 95% of our Paraguayo peaches to Europe"

Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Switzerland are some of the countries importing most of the Paraguayo peaches produced and marketed by companies like Samafru. "The Spanish market cannot pay the prices that are paid abroad and that is why Spanish producers focus on foreign destinations," explains Antonio Sarabia, manager of Samafru. Paraguayo peaches should be ready for harvesting between 15 and 20 April, although "everything will depend on the weather," affirms Sarabia.

So far, the current campaign has developed without any major issues and the production is expected to be greater than last year's, "although we need to remain very cautious, as frost or a hailstorm could ruin everything," says Sarabia. The weather in the rest of Europe also needs to be taken into account, given how it can affect the demand for this type of fruit, as Paraguayo peaches become more popular when the weather is more pleasant.

Another country to take into account as far as the production of Paraguayo peaches is concerned is Italy. "They are big stonefruit producers, but also big consumers. In any case, they start the campaign much later," explains Sarabia. Consequently, they are deemed complementary markets to meet the needs of consumers rather than direct competitors.
