Germany: Aldi Süd promotes vegetable academies

The Aldi Süd Group supports the spread of the vegetable farms "field school" - an educational program in which pupils learn more about food by growing their own vegetables.

In the vegetable academy, children and young people learn not only where food comes from and how it is grown, but also how to grow the vegetables first hand. "This knowledge is lost more and more because there are fewer and fewer places where children can learn how vegetables grow and how they taste fresh," says Dr Christoph Schmitz, founder of the Vegetable Academy. "Throughout the year, children learn about the cultivation, the harvest and the processes involved in marketing and processing, developing an awareness of healthy nutrition and an appreciation of food".

The multi-award-winning educational program has been developed by the non-profit organisation Ackerdemia e.V. Just under 50 schools and more than 2,000 pupils have already participated. Aldi Süd will support the educational program over a three year period with a total of €300,000 for the expansion of the facilities in southern and western Germany.
