Taiwan: Stable pineapple sales to mainland China

"The pineapple production areas in Taiwan are located in the central and southern regions and have been expanding in recent years. Because of the typhoon last year, yields are expected to be down 10%, especially for top quality pineapples, but prices should be better than last year," said Mrs. Michelle from Dingxin, an industry expert.

"Our company was established in May 2013 and is located in Taiwan Pingtung. We have a pineapple planting base covering over 80 acres. At the inception of the company, we only grew 'diamond pineapples', and the listing period was from the beginning of January to the end of June each year. After 4 years of cultivation and market expansion, we are now able to provide high quality pineapples throughout the year, such as the diamond, milk, watermelon and sugarcane pineapples."

"We sell locally but also export to mainland China and Northeast Asian countries. Our produce is becoming more and more popular in the market, which is mainly due to its smooth surface, slender shape and unique taste. In the past few years, the annual sales to mainland China basically remained stable, at about 27,000 tons. Of our high quality pineapple, 90% is sold in Taiwan, and the other 10% is sold to Chinese traders, who will resell to the wholesale market and supermarkets. From May this year, we will base ourselves on the Taiwan market and begin to promote our own brand 'Guoranmeil' and strive to let more consumers know how good our pineapples can be."
