Stored onion prices fall by a third in Ukraine

The difficult onion market has caused serious issues for farmers and wholesale companies in Ukraine who specialise in long term storage. During the last 6 months, onion prices have seen a decrease of 30%, according to market information recently released by Info-Shuvar.

"The early autumn prices for onion farms inthe Southern region reached 2,5-3,0 UAH/kg(0,08-0,09 EUR/kg), after rumors about spoilage damaging half of the harvest at many professional farms, caused demand to shoot up. However, farmers had increased the onion production area, which meant that supplies were up by 6% compared to the three years before." shared Tetiana Hetman, head manager of Information analysis centre 'Info-Shuvar'.

According to state statistics, Ukraine harvested more than 1 million tons of onions in 2016, and on the back of the larger production volumes, many producers and wholesalers put their onions in storage in the hopes that the prices would rise in the second half of winter. As the weather became warmer, many of the onions brought to the market were of poor quality which brought the prices down to 1,3-1,5 UAH/kg (0,04-0,05 EUR/kg), compared to 1,9-2,3 UAH/kg (0,06-0,07 EUR/kg) for better quality onions.

"A similar situation occurred back in 2011/2012, when onion prices fell to 0,7-1,0 UAH/kg (0,06-0,09 EUR/kg) in early March. We can safely say that prices this season have set an anti-record." concluded Tetiana.
