According to Mutha, about three years ago he read an article on Freshplaza about Don Limón. The article was about development projects with limes in Mexico. What immediately struck him was the concept of partnerships and the positive attitude of Andreas Schindler, CEO of Don Limón with regards to social responsibility. Agrion is a company that works with a network of local growers in India.

Mutha decided to send Schindler an e-mail. After a couple of months, both parties realized they shared a common mindset, which led to the shipment of a single container as a pilot. As a company that is mainly involved with citrus in South America, Don Limón was quite unfamiliar with the Indian grape sector. Therefore, Schindler decided to travel to India.
“Schindler visited our company and actually stayed over to get to know us better. His main strength is his ability to adapt. He really has a multicultural attitude and brings along a lot of passion and positive energy. In the same way, he was also very impressed with our enterprise. During that time we exchanged a lot of ideas, which lead to projects like our training programs for local farmers. And again this partnership between Don Limón and Agrion Overseas actually was made possible by an article on Freshplaza."
The company is very happy with the current partnership. Mutha added that since they’ve started working with Don Limón, they've been part of projects with the German government. Agrion Overseas also has been helping small farmers to increase their volumes and to adopt sustainable farming methods. "The Indian agricultural sector has several challenges and problems, but with the combined effort of both our companies and the farmers we are able to provide solutions, such as the implementation of high tech applications.”
While Agrion Overseas has existed in its current form for about four years, the company started about ten years ago. It was founded by two growers, Vishal Joshi and Mahesh Patil, who had an interest in export and improving their production values. Mutha joined the two growers, bringing along his expertise in marketing. While the company started with 16 small growers, Agrion Overseas currently has a network of 70 farmers.
The company and its associated growers are based in the regions of Nashik and Sangli, major growing regions for grapes. The main varieties are white seedless and black seedless grapes. The next season started on time in January and should last until week 15. “The company progressed to shipment plans of 100 containers this year, whereas our last season export was only 30 containers,” says Mutha.
“The partnership with Don Limón has helped a lot. It allowed us to adopt the brand identity of Don Limón, which let us capitalize on the rising demand in the retail sector,” says Mutha. The company is going to export to the Netherlands and other parts of Europe through Hamburg in Germany. The company is also going to start exporting to North America, as Agrion Overseas has now all necessary certificates for this market. A pilot shipment that was sent to this market last year met with a great response.
