"Spain: "The production of pointed cabbage has doubled in 5 years"

The production of pointed cabbage has increased steadily in the area of Granada's Costa Tropical. This is due to the occasional weather issues in the region of Murcia and the ideal weather conditions for this product in the area of Motril. Moreover, besides this increase in the production volume, 95% of the pointed cabbage planted in the Motril area is organic.

"Compared to 5 years ago, the production volume has doubled," states Javier Chamorro, Commercial Manager at the company Bio Montaña. The increase in the number of hectares planted has made it possible to gain ground in the international market. To this we must add that the pointed cabbage market has been growing at the expense of other types, such as round and curly cabbage. This is due to the improvements achieved in terms of flavour and quality.

"100% of Bio Montaña's production is intended for European consumption," states Chamorro. The countries demanding this type of cabbage the most are France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Germany, Scandinavia and England. The product is grown in central Europe during the summer and autumn and is then kept in storage for a little longer; however, this is not a problem for the Spanish production, which hits the market with fresh cabbages when the European stocks are scarce. Consequently, there is no direct competition, as there is no overlap in the campaigns.
