150% increase of fennel prices in some areas of Italy

Last year, Sicily recorded excessive autumn rains that gave rise to some quality problems in the December harvest. "Fortunately for us, the low temperatures of the month of January did not cause any quality problems, only a little delay in the harvest," explains Francesco Zito, head of the Societá Agricola Zito & Co. This is due to the problems suffered by producers in other areas of Italy, so prices have been very satisfactory this year compared to last season.

Fennel is a typical Italian product that is gradually gaining recognition in other countries. "We sell 100% of our fennel to Sicilian customers, especially because of the high cost of transport," stated Zito, whose company is based in Siracusa. However, given the current market shortages, this year they have also received requests from the north and centre of the country.
