A Chinese mission visited the facilities of the State Phytosanitary Service (SFE) of the Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday to coordinate the latest technical and logistical details of their upcoming visit to the producing and packing pineapple farms in the country.
After this visit, China will issue a report which will help the Chinese authorities decide whether to grant access to Costa Rican pineapples to their markets.
Marco Vinicio Jimenez Salas, Director of SFE said that "Chinese authorities don't have a deadline to submit this report, but we hope it's positive and we can soon start exporting pineapples to that region."
The goal of the technical visits is to establish if producers conduct rigorous risk management of agricultural quarantine pests on their product so that they do not pose a danger to Chinese crops.
In 2016, pineapple exports accounted for more than USD 1.6 billion dollars, according to Procomer.
These inspection and market opening processes are governed by international standards of the World Trade Organization, of which both parties are members.
