"Uruguay: "We can't enter the plantations due to the strong winds"

Uruguay declared an orange code warning at the weekend because of strong winds exceeding 90 kilometers per hour. The winds mainly affected the coastal departments of Montevideo, Canelones, San Jose, Colonia, Maldonado and Rocha. The Uruguayan meteorological department, INUMET, also declared a yellow code for the departments of Soriano, Flores, Durazno, Florida, Lavalleja, and Treinta y Tres, as they forecast winds of up to 75 mph in these areas.

So far there have been no major damage to the crops in the affected areas, which mainly produce vegetables, corn, wheat, rice, grapes, and citrus. However, the winds are seriously hampering the farmers' work. "We were unable to work or access our lands throughout the whole weekend. We're not even sure if we have damages. However, many producers have said that some fruit trees in other areas fell, so it wouldn't surprise me if we also had problems," said a local farmer.

According to reports, different regions have suffered a power outage since Sunday night. This outage could eventually affect the work of companies engaged in the production and export of fruits and vegetables. In addition, there have been several landslides and damages in urban areas. There still are no reports of significant damages in the agricultural areas.
