Negotiation of the FTA between Mexico & EU to be accelerated

The Secretary of Economy, Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal, and the Trade Commissioner of the European Union (EU), Cecilia Malmström, held a conference call in which they agreed to accelerate negotiations to modernize the Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and the EU (TLCUEM).

"We will position our trade relations in the 21st Century," Guajardo said. He also added that the update of the TLCUEM would increase consumer choices and employment for both parties.

He also said that they shared an open vision that promotes global cooperation. "We are now in an advanced stage of our work together to deepen trade between both sides, we will accelerate the negotiations to obtain its benefits as soon as possible," he said.

The officials also agreed on two forthcoming rounds of negotiations: from April 3 to 7 in Brussels and from June 26 to 29 in Mexico. In this regard, they agreed to meet in Mexico City between these dates to assess the progress of the negotiating teams.

According to Guajardo, the intention of the parties is to advance the modernization process of the TLCUEM so that they could complete it in 2017.
