Partnership with the German GIZ

Cobana Fruchtring Group promotes sustainable cultivation of bananas

“Improvement of sustainable cultivation practices on farms in Costa Rica and Ecuador” is the title of the project initiated by the fruit cooperative, Cobana Fruchtring Group, with the GIZ (German Association for International Cooperation) and the Platanera Río Sixaola farm (PRS) in Costa Rica. This project is part of the develoPPP.de-Program sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The project is based on Platanera Río Sixaola’s years of experience with innovative cultivation. Platanera Río Sixaola has been cooperating with the Cobana Fruchtring Group for years.

Cobana Fruchtring wants to promote advanced and sustainable production in Costa Rica and Ecuador together with GIZ. The focus is mainly on measures to maintain soil quality and biodiversity, which aren’t part of the requirements for the current certifications. The aim is to expand these practices even though they aren’t part of the usual certification standards.

Cobana Fruchtring wants to use its direct influence on the production in order to improve the environmentally friendly banana cultivation, and create a strong network and coordinate the cooperation of the farmers. Furthermore, Cobana Fruchtring aims to market a large and stable quantity of very sustainable bananas to its customers.
