Pakistani kinnows find their way to the Chinese market

Russian and Middle Eastern markets are suffering from economical crises which is causing some concern for Pakistani growers and exporters. As a result, some companies companies are looking at China as an alternative this season. “We’re exporting 15% less to the Middle East than last year,” says Chairman Khalid Qureshi of Rosha Group, a company specialising in kinnow mandarins. This is the first season that they've started exporting to China where kinnows are sold through wholesale channels in Beijing.

According to Qureshi, 30.000 cartons of kinnow have already been exported to China. “The Chinese New Year has already started and this is a good time to market kinnows in China, along with February and March.

While Pakistani companies used to focus on Russia, Qureshi thinks that the Russian market will see less import volumes in the future. However, this does not necessarily mean that China will become the default option for Pakistani exporters. The Chinese market is very demanding, asking only for prime quality that is supported by all required certifications.

The production of the current kinnow season has been great due to good weather. Sizes are better than last year, as well as the quality. He said that prices have been okay, though they’ve diminished by 10% when compared with last year. “The kinnow market right now is a buyer’s market. Customers demand high quality. This sector is still profitable, but it’s difficult. We do expect conditions to improve in March,” says Qureshi in conclusion.
