Rolf Weber, Global Producers:

"Difficult season expected for Central American melons"

The first containers with Costa Rican yellow melons and watermelons from Logifru Internacional S.A. have arrived this week in Europe. "This weekend will also mark the arrival in large volumes of the first Galia and honey melons and of both seedless and regular (mini) watermelons," explains Rolf Weber, of Global Producers, in Venlo.

As a result of an expansion in its sales program, Logifru's melon acreage has expanded to approximately 1,100 hectares. The entire production has the Rainforest Alliance, Grasp, GlobalGAP and ISO certifications. "Overall, we expect no easy season for Central American melons. We are dealing with a high US dollar exchange rate, and the expansion of the watermelon acreage could have an impact on the fruit's marketing," concludes Rolf.
