Slow start, but volume expected for asparagus from Mexico

The imported California asparagus season is slightly slow to kick off thanks in part to a hike in gas prices south of the border. “Mexico is a bit behind starting up with a few obstacles in the way,” says Michael Stewart of Calexico, Ca.’s Altar Produce LLC. “The problem with fuel is going on and that runs directly in line with labour issues—people can’t get to work because there’s no fuel to get to work.” Altar is starting its Mexican season bringing in product from regions such as the Mexicali valley and Caborca. “But it’s slow coming across the border,” he says.

Volume should build
When the imports start flowing in for Altar, Stewart predicts volume will come on. “There is demand for asparagus but I think a lot of retailers are waiting for the volume,” says Stewart. “I think they’re keeping their orders to a minimum just due to the price. By next week it should probably start coming off because we’ll start getting some volume, but not big numbers.” And of course with the increase in volume, comes an anticipated drop in price—right now, Stewart notes that while some shippers have availability, the market is still high and product is ranging from $48-$52 on 11 lbs.

“By next week we’ll probably see mid to low $40s,” says Stewart. “Another week and it’ll probably drop another $28-$30. It’ll drop $10 every week.” With that logic, Stewart anticipates seeing good numbers heading into Valentine’s Day mid-February.
