Jan Westhoeve, Westhoeve Potatoes:

“Potato export is doing well despite high prices”

No complaints can be currently heard on the potato market. “The market has been developing very positively in the past few months. As far as we are concerned, this can last a while longer,” says Jan Westhoeve of Westhoeve Potatoes in Ouddorp, the Netherlands. “Prices are good, and export is also doing well. We export the majority to the Caribbean, to which we have significantly dedicated ourselves in recent years, but we also send potatoes to Portugal and Agrias to Spain. I expect a stable price level until the end of January, but after that, prices for export will probably rise.”

“The potatoes are looking good, qualitatively. We occasionally have a rejection because of a growth crack, but I am quite satisfied with the quality. However, availability is the problem. Fewer potatoes are available in the south of the country. We are currently loading mostly in the Polder and in Groningen, and that is going well. But I doubt we will still have potatoes available for export in July of this year, although small batches usually turn up when there are shortages.”
