Kees Heegsma:

“No switch yet from ex field to cold store carrots”

The carrot market is currently very calm. “It is typical that the securities commission of Emmeloord has not reported any trade in five weeks. Last year, prices were reported at 18-20 cents, and now there is not even a report at all,” says outdoor vegetable trader Kees Heegsma from Lemmer. “After all, we have to cross borders with our carrots, and those countries have plenty of their own product.”

“Last year, the summer cultivation was very good, and because of that, you see people trying their luck in the cultivation of carrots. If the area then expands, but sales are disappointing, you have two setbacks, and that was the case in the summer and the autumn of 2016. As a consequence, much trade has been advanced. Normally, you still have some trade straight from the fields after the cold stores have been filled, but that was not really the case this season,” Kees says about last season.

“It is remarkable that field crops are still being harvested, and not just here, also in Germany. In other years we might have had a parcel around Christmas. But the volumes still in the fields now are truly unique. Normally, there would be a switch around now, from ex field to cold store carrots, but that has not happened as yet. Price levels are also truly minimal. Outdoor crop prices are between 5 and 7 cent, and considering the cost price of cold store carrots is 14 cents, that says it all.”

“Small volumes are being sent overseas, and to some permanent customers in the Czech Republic and Germany, but because of that, trade cannot really get started. Last year, the industry was a buyer around this time, but now they are offering their own carrots. All in all, carrots are not causing a euphoric mood.” Could anything positive be said about the carrots? “Quality is looking very good,” Kees concludes.
