Sweet start for clemenula season in Denmark
The ready to peel season is in full swing in Denmark. Demand started picking up a little more than a month ago and Ole Wiener Kjaer, from Brdr. Kjaer Import and Export, said that he is receiving a lot of phone calls from people looking for more clementines.
In particular, the 'Kiss Me, I'm Sweet' clemenula variety of clementines are proving to be very popular amongst customers. Grown just 180 km south of Barcelona, the season for these particular clementines started just 2 weeks ago, slightly later because of there more northerly location compared to the other growing regions of Murcia and Andalucia. However, Kjaer noted, they may start later, but this also means that their season lasts longer.
Demand is high enough that Kjaer is receiving steady shipments two times a week, every Tuesday and Friday. The boxes are between 9.3- 9.8 kg per box, with 60, 75, 82 pieces.
Prices are averaging around EUR 8.50 per box, down from last year when boxes were running between EUR 9.30 (82 count)- EUR 9.63 (60 count).
"Prices are down and the quality is much better this year compared to last year, which was a disaster. I am happy to say that things are much better this year." concluded Kjaer.
