Already today, about 20 trains run between the Port of Duisburg and various destinations in China. As well as this new trade route, which strategically operates among the Chinese under the Silk Road Initiative "one belt, one road", the CMG and Duisport want to implement new projects together in the Trans-Eurasian area. In addition to the better connection to the markets in Western Europe, China also wants to further develop its provinces economically in Central China and in the west of the country through the Silk Road Initiative.
Additionally, during his visit to the city of Chengdu, Mr. Staake signed a co-operation agreement with the Chengdu International Railway Port Investment Co. Ltd. (CDIRPI), a fully-owned subsidiary of Chengdu Industry Investment Co. Ltd, which is planning a significant increase in the freight transport from China to Europe directly via Duisburg. Duisport has already been working long-term with the large Chinese cities of Chengdu, Chongqing and Urumdi in the Northwest with the Silk Road Initiative.
Staake is sure that the agreed cooperation with China will lead to higher turnover figures in the Port of Duisburg, "We want to develop Duisport as the leading hub in Europe for China's transports."
