United Airlines transports more Peruvian fruit to the US

The United Airlines planes departing from Lima have a double function: they transport people and they transport goods, said Angélica Imae, an Executive of the transportation of goods department of United Airlines Peru, who said there was an increase in fruit shipments.

In Peru, United Airlines operates two daily flights to the United States. The flights depart from Lima and head to the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and to the New York/Newark hub on a daily basis, except for some months (September to December) in which they only fly to that destination three or four times a week.

United Airlines 767 aircraft have 60 cubic meters earmarked for the transportation of products and they can carry up to 14 tons of products.

The 757 aircraft, which is smaller and goes to New York/Newark, have a capacity of 15 cubic meters and can be loaded with up to 2,500 kg.

Imae said that, even though asparagus was the Peruvian flagship product exported by air, this year there had been an increase in the amount of blueberries transported by air and a diversification in the products exported this way.

"We have transported strawberries, mangos, peas, fresh fish and seafood, as well as living fish," she noted.

She also stated that United Airlines had a wide network that allowed Peruvian exporters to send their fruits to different parts of the world.

"For example, the Peruvian asparagus, mangos, blueberries and strawberries pass by Houston but their final destination is Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, and Tokyo," she said.

The airline also transports Peruvian textile exports, which are then distributed in the United States, Asia, and Europe, she added.

"The live fish is sent to the United States, Tokyo, London, and Frankfurt. The perishable products are kept in very good conditions, thanks to the Centre of perishables in Houston. This is what makes our airline so reliable for the transport of this kind of cargo," she stated.
