First among pomegranates: the late-ripening Lintong

Following the end of the Tunisian soft seed pomegranate, the late-ripe pomegranates from Lintong near Xi'an are going on sale. As the late-ripe variety of the best pomegranates, the Lintong is very gorgeous in colour. The fruit is large and the peel thin. The juice of the fruit is nicely sweet. For these reasons it is called the first among the pomegranates and is very popular on the market. "At present, the supply of pomegranates on the market is gradually decreasing. What's more, the Lintong pomegranates are also very tasty. They go on sale around mid-October and we can sell 2500 kg on daily basis," says Ms. Hu from Xi'an.

"The Shaanxi Lintong pomegranates usually sprout in April. They bloom in May and bear fruit in June. In the later half of September, the fruits become ripe. But this year, the pomegranates had to endure the cold weather of the 2015 winter. The summer of 2016 was also very hot and dry, so the pomegranates didn't have enough nutrition and they grew slowly. As a result, the date for the pomegranates to go on sale this year was delayed by a month. There is also a reduction in the production volume. The only reassurance we have is that the quality of the pomegranates is the same as before. What's more, because the market entrance of the pomegranates was delayed, we estimate that we will be able to supply all the way until New Year."

"Lintong pomegranates are divided based on the place they were cultivated, either on the Northern slopes of Mt. Li or the region of emperor Qin Shihuang. Around Mt. Li, the orchard stretches out for 15 kilometers, with a surface of over 800 hectares. It is the largest cultivation base for pomegranates in China. The yearly production can reach 100,000 tons."

"The name of the cultivation region can easily make people think of China's past. In fact, from the Zhou dynasty all the way until the Tang dynasty, Lintong was part of the capital, a region situated at the centre of Chinese political, economic, and cultural activity. As such it has a climate and geography that is gifted with rich resources. The region has more than 10 rivers, 4 good seasons and a clear distinction between dry and wet. The average temperature on yearly basis is 13°C with up to 219 days without frost. All of this is very beneficial to the growth of foodstuffs like fruits and vegetables."

"And Lintong pomegranates are the best of China. In the feudal past, it used to be a tribute to the emperor. Not only did it have a beautiful appearance, but the peel is also very thin and the grains have soft seeds and lots of juice. They can reach a sweetness of 14 brix and have a fresh sweet taste. Additionally, all other pomegranates are already finished on the market after October, so Lintong pomegranates go on sale in a very easy market climate. Even though the production volume of the pomegranates was reduced this year, the quality is the same. In the business, there is a general optimism for this year's market."
