White cabbage remains Russian favourite

Domestic production of white cabbage in Russia is expected to continue through to the end of November, when imports will start from Serbia.

According to a major importer, cabbage supplies have been affected by the embargo. The company used to source from the Netherlands, Germany and Poland, which is no longer allowed. However, the importer did admit that some Polish Chinese cabbage makes its way from Russia via Belarus, although there is not a huge market for this particular variety.

White, Chinese and red cabbage are most commonly consumed. White cabbage has remained popular in Russia and they still prefer the larger sizes. In general, Russian consumers are not interested in the smaller sizes that have become popular in other parts of Europe in recent years.

The vegetable is only consumed during the colder months, with the season ending in April. It is not typically consumed during the summer and the importer said that the demand is greatly affected by supply and prices.
