Malaysian manufacturer takes fruit packaging to another level

Multi-Choice Malaysia Sdn Bhd (MCM), a manufacturer of eco-friendly fruit trays, has high prospects as more and more companies embrace biodegradable packing materials. So far, MCM’s fruit trays are being used in Asia and Europe for packing fruit as well as eggs.

According to Tan Peng Tee, MCM’s CEO, there are prospects of netting more clients for the trays if the current demand is anything to go by. “MCM is the first company in Malaysia to use paper pulp to manufacture fruit trays. We plan to sell our products locally and overseas. We have been aggressive in marketing our produce through exhibitions and roadshows and the feedback has been good,” explains Tan.

MCM currently supplies the trays to growers, packers, distributors as well as wholesalers and the demand has been on the rise for the last three years. Tan said that one of the key features of the eco-friendly trays is their high potential in maintaining fruit quality, hence longer shelf life.

The trays are 100% biodegradable, recyclable and compostable. The pulp molding helps in absorbing excess moisture keeping the fruits fresh longer. “Our trays provide excellent protection from vibration and shock, so customers don’t have to worry about wastage during transportation. They also come in wide range sizes to meet different customer requirements,” Tan further explains.

The fact that the trays are biodegradable has given MCM an upper hand in the market, setting the company apart from other manufacturers. “Our 3-dimensional products are environment friendly and recyclable, if thrown away, they will eventually be biodegraded into fertilizer within a month or two. They are designed with shock-proof features and they can substitute for expanded polystyrene (EPS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and plastic packaging products in respect to performance, functions, practicality, environmental friendliness, competitive pricing, antistatic features and other indexes,” he adds.

MCM is riding on a global trend where more focus has shifted to eco-friendly and recyclable packing material instead of using plastic which is harmful to the environment.

Malaysia is a force to reckon with in the global packaging market, given its quick response to technology and new trends. “Packaging unit volume sales increased in all areas this year, with increase in demand for fast moving consumer goods among Malaysia’s strong middle class. Beverage packaging was the best performing area in 2015, recording the strongest level of primary unit volume growth,” adds Tan.

So far, MCM hasn’t received any complaints on microbial contamination in regard to its trays.
