Crisis talks over ailing German Kaiser's Tengelmann break down
Negotiations between leading retailers Rewe and Edeka have failed to find a solution over the acquisition of ailing supermarket chain, Kaiser's Tengelmann. Both sides have bitterly attacked each other following the talks. Thursday's top-level talks between the heads of the retail rivals, along with leaders of the service sector union Verdi, were expected to lead to an agreement. However, the talks on the future of the German supermarket operator broke down on Thursday, leaving more than 16,000 jobs hanging in the balance. (dw.com

US: Amazon launches restaurant delivery in Orlando
Amazon is pushing further into Central Florida by launching a restaurant delivery program free to members of its Prime service. Meanwhile, the grocery delivery program Instacart, which partnered in South Florida with Publix, said it's nearly ready to do business in Central Florida. Amazon Restaurants is starting delivery with 37 restaurants in the Orlando area. (orlandosentinel.com)

Brazil: Carrefour converts more hypermarkets to new concept

Carrefour has relaunched six of its hypermarkets in Brazil after converting them to its ‘New Generation’ concept. The group now has 62 outlets operating under the concept, which was first launched in 2015. The concept involves an “innovative approach to architecture”, and features changes to the fresh produce area and the introduction of 4,000 new products. (kamcity.com)

Independent retailers are keen to join Spar Hungary
EPR Retail News has reported that more than 80 independent retailers have joined Spar Hungary since the introduction of sub-licensing in 2012 - adding over 100 Spar stores nationwide and providing employment for over 1,300 people. (esmmagazine.com)

Dickson named chairman of Sobeys' parent

The board of directors of Empire Co. Ltd., parent of the Sobeys chain, on Thursday announced the appointment of James M. Dickson as chair. Dickson replaces Robert P. Dexter who announced his intention to retire both as chair and as a member of Empire’s board at the company’s annual meeting on Sept. 15. Dexter served on the board at Empire for 29 years including the last 12 as chair. (supermarketnews.com)

Groupe Casino posts marginal decrease in French same store sales

French retail giant Groupe Casino has posted a marginal decrease in same store sales in its home market (-0.6%) in the third quarter of the year, according to results posted this morning. Its Géant Casino operation saw a 0.3% increase in same store growth in the quarter, however Leader Price was down (-2.7%), as was Monoprix (-2.3%). Franprix saw a marginal fall of 0.1% in same store performance. 'In France, total sales amounted to €4,760m and were shaped by two factors: a plan to close 282 loss-making stores (out of a total 10,521 stores), which had a negative -0.6% impact on sales,' the retailer said.
