A few weeks before the first cuts of asparagus in the Yaqui Valley start, there has been no damage reported due to the presence of the worm burner.
Alejandro Suarez Beltran, Manager of the Local Board of Plant Health (JLSV), said that last year, throughout the summer cycle, there had been a high incidence of this pest in soybean, which migrated to asparagus in its early cut stages. In 2016, he said, things have been very different.
"This year's weather conditions helped us have fewer health problems. We left several notices to soybean producers and farms. In turn, they applied control measures so the problem did not grow. Hopefully, things will continue to be good," he said.
Last cycle, he stated, some producers reported the presence of the worm burner and the blind gasilla, pests that are common in the cultivation of asparagus and that may decrease its production if left uncontrolled.
Since the beginning of the cycle, the JLSV checks each horticultural farm to verify that they are in good condition and to prevent them from inheriting pests from other crops.
