Sil Moonen, BerryFarm:

“Strange blueberry season ends with skyrocketing prices”

“It has been a very strange blueberry season. At the start of the season, the mood was quite negative, due to the Brexit and the fall of the British pound, but eventually it turned into quite a good season,” says Sil Moonen of BerryFarm from Roggel, the Netherlands. “The berries are currently incredibly expensive.”

The current price level of 12 to 16 euro makes that clear. “Everyone is now looking for product but the market has hardly any berries left,” says Moonen, who will personally continue harvesting until week 41. “Prices have been fairly good this season, resulting in less berries being frozen. Although we also had low prices of 2.50 to 3 euro at the start of the season.”

Blueberries have been planted in white foil in Germany

“Qualitatively, it has been a good season. In general, slightly less has been harvested compared to last year, but prices were substantially better. Besides, retailers both in the UK and in the Netherlands are increasingly using larger packaging, and that significantly boosts consumption of blueberries. Instead of 125 grammes, more and more buckets of 300 or 500 grammes are being sold, meaning more berries are being sold in general.”

“The German market also no longer has its own product. Peru might be harvesting now, but does not send much to Europe as a consequence of good demand from the US and Asia. That is the difference between us and the South Americans, they commit to no one and send their product elsewhere if they can get better prices,” Moonen concludes.
