President of Peru

"We'll beat Chile with blueberries in China"

The President of Peru, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, said in New York that his government was doing everything possible so that Peru becomes part of the select group of countries that form the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). To achieve this, he said, they needed to promote formalisation and exports.

OECD
"Colombia is more advanced than us [in joining the OECD], but we will work faster to join them. We are asking Congress to give us powers to formalise, which is what we need the most to belong to the OECD," he said in an interview with Canal N.

Exports to China
"We have Red Globe grapes in China, soon we will have blueberries. The head of SENASA was with me in China and we were told that they were going to approve the entry of Peruvian blueberries. I come from a Conference at the National Council of foreign relations and, after meeting a man who produced blueberries in Chile, I told him: ' I've got bad news for you and good news for us. We are going to beat you in China with blueberry exports."

Relations with Chile
At another point, the president said that he would make an official visit to Chile in November, where he will also participate in a meeting of the National Development Institute (Inade) and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal). He said that relations with their southern neighbour were not completely frozen, that they were moderately good and that this new meeting would improve them.
