Erik Kieftenburg, Fruit Noordholland:

"Plum market increasing after week of top supply"

The sunny weather has been very good for plum sales. “More plums are sold at the side of the road which drops the supply faster,” says Erik Kieftenburg of Fruit Noordholland from Zwaagdijk. “This upswing was good for the market. There was a peak supply in the middle of the country last week, there were 5000 crates of Reine Victoria ready to be sold. The market could not process this amount, so the prices dropped severely.”

“The price level was moderate on Monday, while the supply was relatively low. Thursday last week, however, the price increased and on Friday we had a steady price level around €1.60. I expect that the price will increase more, given the beautiful weather,” says Erik. “The supply is quite low in North Holland and the volumes are disappointing. Part of the harvest was lost due to the heavy rain, and because we do not have the volumes, it will be hard to complete the supermarket deals.”

“We are selling the last Jubileum plums and we are hoping to sell the Reine Victoria for another three weeks. We, citizens of North Holland, are very proud of our Reine Victoria plums. We try to go through the orchard as much as possible to pick the plums and guarantee the best ripeness. Although, there should be a better return for this, that is why the acreage has been reduced over the years,” says Erik. “Days like today are perfect for the sales; all those cyclists take plums with them for on the go!”
