Peru and India to negotiate an FTA

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade, Edgar Vasquez, said the ministry's priority was to join efforts to sign an FTA with India.

"It is a necessary step. Minister Ferreyros has said that he wants to have the first technical meeting within the first 100 days," he said.

The deputy minister was accompanied by the Indian Ambassador in Peru, Sandeep Chakravorty, and said that the feasibility studies were being completed. "We are still pending a response from the Government of India to finish the study and start negotiations between both governments," he said.

In turn, ambassador Chakravorty said there could be an improvement in exports this year. "It is possible that Peruvian exports surpass imports from India this year," he said.

The minister and the ambassador made this statements after the opening of the IPHEX-LATAM 2016 fair and business conference , which included 20 Indian companies that are leaders in the healthcare industry.

Peru mainly exports grapes to India. The country expected to expand its supply with avocados, blueberries, mangos, and beans.
