Kenya: Service to bypass brokers in potato farming

OLX wants to discard middlemen in the potato farming industry through the launch of its SMS service targeting farmers without smartphones.

The online classifieds company seeks to help farmers deliver potatoes directly from the farm, by linking them to customers and retailers in markets, restaurants and potato chips companies.

"Potato farmers have been constantly exploited by middlemen who dictate potato prices. By trading directly on OLX, farmers will have a direct link to their buyers thus increasing their profits," OLX country manager Peter Ndiang’ui said.
