70% of the mango consumed in the US comes from Mexico

Once again, American consumers prefer Mexican mangoes. According to data released by domestic entrepreneurs, 70 percent of the mango consumed in the US is Mexican, which equates to 95 percent of the all the Mexican mango production. Francisco Villegas, president of Emex AC said there were 10 states in Mexico that produced mango throughout 7 months, starting in February in Chiapas and ending in the state of Sinaloa. According to Emex, 56 packing plants exported 36.6 million boxes of mango in 2005, a number that increased to 65.5 million boxes from 75 packing plants in 2015.

This increase has been achieved thanks to the recognition from the US National Mango Board. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges faced by farmers, as the continuous changes in temperature has changed the months in which exports take place. However, this organization emphasized that the union of producers has made it possible to overcome these limitations.

Following Mexico, in order of importance, are Peru, Ecuador and Brazil, with volumes that range between 35,000 and 25,000 tons per year, respectively. After them come Guatemala, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. According to the Agricultural food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) 23 Mexican states produce mangoes. Among the major producers are Guerrero, Nayarit, and Sinaloa which together account for 53% of national production ( 22%, 17%, and 14%, respectively).
