Costa Rica approved imports of Hass avocados from the Dominican Republic. The information was confirmed by Randall Benavides, president of the Chamber of Exporters of Costa Rica.
The business chamber held a meeting with the authorities of the State Phytosanitary Service (SFE) to determine the measures to lift the blockade there was on this product.
Benavides said they believed the measure would allow Costa Rican consumers to purchase the product at a good price.
"The risk analysis that would allow the import of avocado should be ready in the coming months.
The analysis would set the phytosanitary requirements to be met by the avocados from the Dominican Republic," he added.
Regarding Mexican avocados, Benavides said the authorities had informed them there still were some technical studies that needed to be conducted.
"We requested the opening of the market in the Dominican Republic and the only thing missing to obtain it is the risk analysis. We also requested the solution of the conflict with Mexico, but were told that the government is doing scientific research to facilitate opening the market.
We believe that, even though the sun blotch disease is a concern, the scientific studies don't have a deadline so this could last anywhere between six months and a year," he said.
