On August 10th, watermelons are on the street outside a supermarket in Changling county in Souyuan city, Jilin province, for a low price promotion.
This summer, the purchase price of watermelon in Jilin province experienced a rollercoaster ride from top to bottom. In August, its price continued to drop from 0.8 Yuan/kilo to 0.16 Yuan/kilo, and watermelon growers are facing significant losses.
Such a price drop is due to the following: firstly this is the watermelon season and large volumes of watermelons swarm to the market at the same time. Secondly the cultivation area of several agricultural crops such as corn are decreased while that of watermelon is increased, and as a consequence, the supply and demand in the watermelon market is imbalanced.
