On July 22 people in Finland started supplying early planting onions. Grower Juha Simola was the first on the market. The variety is Jargo, planted in mid April, covered with acrylic. The hectare yield was 55 tonnes. Simola is a member and grower of the largest vegetable growers group in Finland, Vihannes Laitila.
Until now all onions grown on Finland's fields were grown as planting onions due to the short growing season. However, due a change in the climate the possibility of cultivating seeding onions has come within reach.
Last year the first testing plots were seeded, and the results were promising. This year these seeding tests were scaled up and all three look promising. The cultivations at Vihannes Laitila are lead by Jan Langerak. Vihannes Laitila has ambitious objectives, namely supplying Finnish onions all year round. The same goes for white cabbage and carrots. It is important for this that part of the cultivation succeeds as seeding onions, the availability of good seeding onion varieties is much better than the slightly tight assortment of planting onion varieties.
