Weather pushes back French melon season

A late-arriving summer resulted in sluggish demand for melons in France, but that same late summer has also affected production. With demand and the supply of melons starting off slow this season, growers and shippers are having an okay season.

“The French melon market has not been so bad,” said Jerome Jausseran of Force Sud. “We have less volume this year with higher prices, so, in the end, the earnings are about the same.” He anticipates a bump in sales during the holidays this summer, as is usual for the season, which runs from mid-May through the end of September.

“We are the third-largest grower in France, and we source our melons from France, Spain and Morocco,” Jerome noted. “We grow the Charentais melon 11 months out of the year, and, in addition to selling melons in France, we export melons to Belgium and Switzerland.”
