Costa Rica: Melon and bananas boost the agricultural economy

Melon and bananas are boosting the country's agricultural economy and helping it recover this period.

By May 2016 the agricultural sector's activity grew by 2.78%, according to recent data from the Monthly Economic Activity Index (IMAE) of Costa Rica's Central Bank (BCCR).

According to the report, this year's banana production was favored by climatic conditions, unlike a year ago when the weather had a negative effect on the crop.

Additionally, there was an increase in the number of clusters and in the fruit's quality in this period.

Meanwhile, the scheduling of the melon harvest to place it in the international market generated good returns in production.

In contrast, the pineapple's performance declined in this period, stated the report.

Juan Rafael Lizano, president of the National Chamber of Agriculture, said that the sector still had no real growth.

"That 2.78% does not place us at the level where we were two years ago, we are still far below. We can say that we are recovering, not that we are growing.

The first half has been very good, the weather was good, exports were good, but we hope to grow and stop the negative trend we faced for many years," he said.

Lizano stated the country needs to grow by more than 5% in agriculture so that there is a real increase.

The sector expects to achieve better indicators and have a greater growth in the second half of the year.
