We discussed this melon with Salvatore Lotta, the PO's sales director. "We started with 30 hectares last year, now we have 60 and we are considering whether to expand some more in 2017. Volumes should reach around 2,500 tons in mid-November." Because of the bad weather, the campaign started 15 days late.
Melon fields.
Majores, which already received an award from the British market at Bellavita Expo 2015, holds the GlobalGAP certification.
"In Italy, we sell our melons to retailers in Campania and in the regions north of Campania. This year we will also carry out tests in Apulia. Shipments abroad will leave in a few days, destined to the Netherlands and, from there, to Northern Europe."
Quality tests on the first produce harvested show that sugar levels are over 5° Brix and that flesh is crunchy and compact with a white colour. The shelf-life of Majores melons is triple that of traditional melons. In addition, it can be used as a side dish, dessert or as fruit.
"Melons will only be sold under the Majores brand and we have high expectations for them. We want consumers to recognise our product at first glance and Majores melons really stand out."
