China: Record prices for export carrots

According to statistics of the Xiamen customs inspection bureau, during the production seasons of 2015 and 2016, in total 2431 batches of carrots were exported. That is 85,000 ton in weight and 44 million USD in value. Compared to the same period last year, the batches, weight and value respectively decreased by 26%, 28% and 12%. The individual price is the highest in 10 years.

There are three reasons for this year's drop in volume but surge in prices. First, solid domestic demand. Early 2016 was cold, so the price for leaf vegetables is steep and the market demand consequently turns to carrots. Transactions are also settled swiftly. Second, the production volume decreased, again due to the winter cold. Third, the cultivation area shrank. Last production season, the supply was bigger than the demand. The result was lowered benefits. The financial blow for the farmers led to a reduction of the cultivation area.
