The new onion season has started again, and Daily Onions kicked off the season by revealing their new, private brand, packaging. “We are staring afresh in good spirits, and can now ship recognisable bags of onions under our private brand to our customers,” Van Belzen says. He is looking forward to the onion season with confidence. “We also have some with less quality, but, all-over, plenty of Dutch onions are still available. We are hoping to keep up the quality, but it is still too early to say anything about that yet.”
“The UK is an important export market for Daily Onions. You could currently summarise this market as ‘The Unexpected,’ considering the Brexit, the decrease in the pound, the transport perils around Calais and the extreme weather. At the same time, those circumstances also make trade exciting. I am not worried we will lose the export to the UK. The British have to eat, and experienced exporters know how to deal with these challenges.”
“The onion season for 2015/16 has been good when looking at the entire season. We had our downs, but that is part of trade. The last of the old onions went to Eastern Europe, and we are now looking ahead at the new onions. I expect a slightly lower price level on average than last year. Demand for the first onions is still minimal, but I expect export to really start next week,” Van Belzen concludes.
