Costa Rica: Pineapple activity needs more monitoring

The Ombudsman stated that the State of Costa Rica had to improve supervision of the pineapple activity, mainly of its social and environmental impact, because of the rapid growth in plantings and production that made the country one of the leading producers of this fruit worldwide.

According to Costa Rica's National Pineapple Production and Commerce Platform, the area devoted to this production grew from 3,400 hectares in 1986 to 42,000 hectares in 2014.

Costa Rica is one of the leading producers of pineapple worldwide and had exports for 808 million dollars in 2015.

The Ombudsman is interested in improving monitoring as it has received some complaints related to working conditions and the impact that the production has had on the environment.
