Italy: Peach and nectarine situation looking good

After the Tavolo Ortofrutticolo dell'Emilia Romagna meeting on Friday June 24th, president Gianni Amidei (in the photo) commented on the market trend and future perspectives - "production this year has been lower than 2015 and 2014. We are expecting progressive harvests with no overlaps."

"Thanks to the heatwave that swept across Europe this week, demand is expected to be good. The weather is consumption's best friend, especially or what concerns peaches and nectarines."

"For what concerns productions, harvesting is regular and there are no stocks in warehouses. Now that summer is here, fruit has finally reached an excellent quality."

According to CSO Italy data, peach quantities are expected to be a little below 1.4 million tons. Volumes are similar in Spain, where Saturn peaches compensate the lack of traditional ones. Production in Greece has increased, but quantities are still lower than average, while it has decreased in France.

The drop in nectarine production in Europe (-6% for little over 1.4 million tons) and the fact that there are no overlaps should lead to good sales on all European markets.
