Gino Bernaola, de Sobifruits:

"Peru: "We'll export 15% more cherimoyas"

Peru continues to consolidate as one of the world's largest producers of cherimoyas; estimates in fact point to a 15% increase in exports compared to last year. "Peruvian cherimoyas are recording a stable demand and the market is paying the expected prices. A few years ago, we started exporting Peruvian cherimoyas mainly to Costa Rica, and this year we have a little more demand from Europe and other destinations," states Gino Bernaola, of Sobifruits.

Unlike Spain or other producing countries, Peru has the right climatic conditions to harvest this fruit all year round, producing stable volumes. "The most striking difference between the variety grown in Peru and the cherimoyas from other countries is that it contains fewer seeds and its taste is more appreciated. Also, the vast majority of producers cultivate this fruit under organic standards. These two factors give us a distinct advantage to enter markets with these requirements," stresses the spokesperson of Sobifruits.

"This fruit is very perishable and soft, and its shelf life is incredibly short. This means that its transportation cannot take too long and should be done by air, which means that some countries are unable to import Peruvian cherimoyas. Despite this, this year we have made shipments to the Far East and Egypt with good results. We've gone from one or two shipments per month to shipping up to two tonnes per week," concludes Bernaola.
