“It’s an extremely tight cabbage market,” explained Calvert Cullen of Northampton Growers Produce Sales, Inc. in Cheriton, Virginia. Tropical storm Colin and weather issues are to blame for the lower than normal cabbage supplies for the eastern part of the U.S.
“We had a loss of acreage in North Carolina, and the only areas that are producing right now are Delaware and New Jersey,” added Cullen.
The tight market, coupled with continued high consumer demand for cabbage is resulting in an expensive price tag for the popular vegetable.
“Cabbage pieces in our area are very high,” said Cullen. “The market today was $16.00 per carton FOB.” He added that he's hopeful cabbage supplies will improve relatively soon.
“We expect Michigan and the Midwest to get started this weekend or next week,” said Cullen. “I feel in another week or so cabbage production should be getting closer to being back to normal.”
